Government of the Republic of Uganda confirmed it has allocated 1.3 trillion shillings (about 361 million dollars) for sports infrastructure development in the 2025/26 national budget.
Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Hon. Matia Kasaija revealed this during the National budget reading on Thursday at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
He confirmed that 1.3 trillion shillings has been earmarked from the 72.3 trillion budget.
The allocation is mainly in line with the stadium construction that is currently ongoing namely; Hoima City Stadium, Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, Phase two of Mandela National Stadium renovations and the associated training grounds.
All the aforementioned activities are to make sure Uganda gets ready ahead of CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027.
“In preparation for CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, Government has so far spent 496.8 billion shillings for the construction of Hoima and Akii-Bua Stadiums as well as the associated training facilities across the country. Government will spend a total of 1.3 trillion shillings to get these facilities completed,” he stated.
“In addition, Mandela National Stadium has been upgraded and Government commissioned the high altitude training center in Teryet, Kapchorwa.” Added Kasaija.
Hoima City Stadium is set for completion in December this year while Akii-Bua Stadium will be handed over to Government by the end of next year.
The second phase of renovation at Mandela National Stadium that will see a complete change of the VIP and VVIP wing is expected to commence in October this year.
