Holders Senegal face giants Nigeria, Sudan braced for Congo duel

Tuesday August 5, 2025 – Aman stadium, Zanzibar

  • Congo vs Sudan – 5pm
  • Senegal vs Nigeria – 8pm

Action in the TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship 2024 moves to Group D where defending champions Senegal clash with Nigeria in their opening match.

The fixture at Aman stadium, Zanzibar will be preceded by Sudan and Congo duel.

The two sides will look to win their opening match before facing group favourites – the Lions of Teranga and Super Eagles in subsequent matches.

Back to the West African clash, Nigeria coach Eric Chelle has downplayed the derby referring to the match as one against two giant nations.

“I don’t think it’s a derby but this is a game between two big countries in Africa. They have a history in football. Senegal have a good generation and a good team,” he explained.

“So, our preparation for this game has been good and we will look to implement everything we have prepared into this match.”

Souleymane Diallo the Senegal coach said; “We are not here to defend the trophy in our keeping, we came to try to win another trophy, but for that we have to set the first objective which is qualifying from the group. These days, African football doesn’t provide for teams to be classed as favourites. That is why we respect all the teams in our group. Sudan, Congo or Nigeria all have players that have earned the right to be in this competition. They are all good and respected by us.”
