How Uganda Cranes players rated in the 3-0 loss to Algeria

Co-hosts Uganda failed to emulate Tanzania and Kenya failing to register victory in their opening match of the TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship 2024.

Ayoub Ghezala opened the scoring in the first half before second half strikes from Abderrahmane Meziane and Sofiane Bayazid sealed the win.

Ismael Kiyonga rates the Cranes players Mandela National stadium, Namboole.

Joel Mutakubwa 5/10:

He could do very little about the goals, though he maybe could have commanded his defenders a little better to avoid the first goal. Twice made fine saves to deny the Algerians.

Gavin Kizito 4/10:

Given a very torrid evening by the Algerian swift attacks as witnessed in the build up to goal number 3. Going forward, he whipped in a few decent crosses in the second half.

Gideon Odong 4/10:

Timid and jittery on his debut. Slept on duty for the third goal.

Arnold Odong 4/10:

Caught out of position for both second half goals. Decent on the ball but without it, looked bad.

Rogers Torach 4/10:

Shockingly started ahead of club teammate Mukundane but failed to assert himself. Kept goal scorer onside Meziane onside for second goal while poorly read game for the third. His decision making was slow as well.

Joel Sserunjogi 7/10:

Some really strong moments from the anchorman. Never afraid to ask for the ball anywhere on the pitch and completed the most passes of any Cranes player. Didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

Enock Ssebagala 5/10:

Was into oblivion for the entire first half but reborn after the break when he dropped deep with the introduction of Karim Watambala.

Allan Okello 5/10:

The captain went missing in the no.10 role but improved after the break when deployed as a wing forward on the right. Created a few moments including a chance for Anyama in a silent first half.

Jude Ssemugabi 3/10:

Locked out of the match and never figured how to jump back into it. Rightly replaced at halftime.

Emmanuel Anyama 5/10:

Got a nod ahead of Sentamu and Ahimbisibwe. Squandered a good chance just moments before the break. Huffed and puffed but without any breakthrough.

Patrick Kakande 5/10:

Only attacking player that looked like could make something happen. Nevertheless, he didn’t play to the level expected of him on the day. Twice tested the goalkeeper from long range.

Substitutes

Karim Watambala 6/10:

His introduction gave the Cranes belief and more grip on the ball freeing Okello to go on his favoured right. Shot wide twice from his trade mark long range.

Yunus Sentamu 4/10:

Brought on to try and get a goal with 15 minutes left but rarely touched the ball.

Shafik Nana Kwikiriza 4/10:

Replaced Ssebagala but not much he could do. Nearly got a consolation with a curling effort.
