MultiChoice to Discontinue Showmax Streaming Service

MultiChoice Group has announced plans to discontinue its streaming platform Showmax following what the company described as a “comprehensive review” of the service.

In a communication sent to subscribers, MultiChoice said the decision was made as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its digital offerings and ensure long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming market.

“Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has taken the decision to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future,” the company said in the email sent to customers.

However, MultiChoice reassured users that the service will continue to operate normally for the time being.

“Importantly, at the moment there will be no interruption to your current service. You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time,” the company stated.

The broadcaster added that more details will be communicated later, including timelines for the shutdown and any transition arrangements for subscribers.

“Showmax subscribers are a priority for us, and we are working on plans to ensure clear communication and a smooth transition when the time comes,” the company noted.

Despite the decision, MultiChoice emphasized that streaming remains a key part of its long-term strategy. The company said it will continue investing in premium content, technological innovation and partnerships to enhance digital entertainment for customers.

Launched in 2015, Showmax has been one of Africa’s major video-on-demand platforms, offering a mix of international and locally produced content. Over the years, the service has competed with global streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video in the rapidly evolving streaming market.

While MultiChoice has not yet provided a specific shutdown date, the announcement signals a major shift in the company’s digital strategy as competition intensifies across Africa’s streaming industry.
