Uganda Gazelles power forward Hope Akello has joined Moroccan Basketball Club, Majd Tanja Basketball Club.
The development was made public via the club’s social media platforms on Friday, November 14, 2025.
“From Uganda to Morocco, Hope Akello is joining our team. With her energy, focus and drive, there is no limit to what we can achieve together,” the statement partly reads.
Since joining the reigning Women’s National Basketball League champions, JKL Lady Dolphins in 2017, Akello has been outstanding, thus being named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) on several occasions.
The eight-year journey of patience, hard work and excellence in the local league has finally paid off since the aggressive power forward has finally signed his maiden professional contract.
Humble background
Akello was born to Moses Angura and Ruth Mirembe in the Eastern district of Tororo. She began her journey to becoming a basketball player in 2012 while attending Trinity College Nabbingo.
Akello later joined St. Mary’s Secondary School, where she helped the institution dominate basketball in the country and across the region. Although she had a slight feel for league basketball while featuring for the Gladiators, it was not a proper test of her abilities.
In her maiden league campaign with the JKL Lady Dolphins, the team finished third before they went on to clinch the title the following year. From that point, Akello has risen from strength to strength without looking back.
She is now a mainstay in the Gazelles’ roster and can only get better with the Moroccan assignment presented before her.
